Rose Ayling-Ellis made history in Paris as the 昀椀rst
Deaf presenter to cover the Paralympic Games,
with broadcaster Clare Balding and live BSL
coverage.
Rose was excellent! This might be surprising
as she has no sports background, but she is a
brilliant presenter and it was wonderful to see.
Rose said it was “really exciting” to become the
昀椀rst deaf person to host live sports coverage on
TV, highlighting that the opportunity “helps break
down barriers of understanding what we are
capable of, though really, we shouldn’t have to
prove this to anyone”.
I have seen Yvonne Cobb on See Hear, but I didn’t
know she was a chef! Yvonne is the 昀椀rst Deaf
chef to appear on popular TV shows like This
Morning (ITV) and Morning Live (BBC One), on
which she has presented cookery demonstrations
and promoted the use of BSL. She is now one of
Morning Live's family of experts.
And, in case you missed it, JDA’s Wednesday
Club members were warmly featured in
Rose Ayling-Ellis’s documentary “Old Hands,
New Tricks” — about teaching older people in
retirement homes how to use sign language. We
were delighted to be visited by the lovely Deaf
presenter and BSL teacher Marios Costi afterwards.
It’s great to have Deaf representation on TV.
I think 昀椀nally in 2025 we can all celebrate Deafness!
