MY GREAT DAY OUT AT LORD’S
Stephen Fireman writes:

I am an avid cricket fan through my father, David
Fireman. My father loved cricket and, when I was
a child, we always watched cricket together.
I love the players of the past, especially David
Gower, Graham Gooch and Ian Botham. So, when
I saw that JDA had arranged an outing to the
famous Lord’s Cricket Ground, a place where
I hadn’t been for a while, I knew I had to go!
I got there on the Number 13 bus with a group of
Deaf people travelling from Finchley. This was an
easy journey and lovely to look at London sights
on the way.
Inside the ground, the 昀椀rst thing we did was
visit the museum. When we entered, I saw a
big painting of the great Indian batsman Sachin
Tendulkar. Brilliant artwork! Brinthan told me he
loved him. We looked around the museum and
saw old kits, memorabilia and cricket bats.
After that, we all sat down for an informative talk,
BSL interpreted. The tour guide showed us cricket
equipment used throughout the decades including
bats and balls. We held cricket bats old and new,
comparing the two.

▲ Brenda’s on the team — watch out South
Africa!
Brenda Sterne thought the new bat was heavy, but
Ross Mansell thought the older one was heavier.
David Solomon was excited to put on the cricket
gloves and batting pads (see picture below).
The talk was very
good, and everyone
enjoyed it and asked
questions. The tour
guide’s favourite
batsman was Joe
Root. Someone
asked him: “Who was
better, Brian Lara or
Sachin Tendulkar?”
He gave a very good
response that Brian
Lara alone was a
great batsman in a
quite average team,
whereas Tendulkar
had a fully great
team to help him win
honours. Lara carried the West Indies on his own.
I agreed with that opinion!
