5785 — Another Happy Year Together!
New Year Message from Sue Cipin OBE, JDA Chief Executive
Through our Tuesday drop-in and ongoing
Information, Advice and Support service,
Jessica, Hannah, Janet, Janine, Danielle, Lisa and
Mira have ensured every Deaf person who turns to
us for help has the support they need to get out of
trouble and deal with their daily life.
With the JDA love they are known for, our
incredible team of Support Workers have kept
the precious older members of our community
safe, well, thriving and enjoying a good life. We
were devastated to lose our “JDA Angel”, Melody.
We carry all she taught us, her beaming smile and
our beautiful, (often hilarious!) memories of her
in our hearts. And we will always miss her.
It’s been a busy year!
Our funny TikToks have created fame and a cult
following for our Wednesday Club members!

Our fantastic Dcafe volunteers rose to the
challenge of coping without their Manager, Ann
Clements, while she was recovering from an
accident that left her housebound for six months.
They continued to come from near and far every
Monday to bake cakes and prepare fresh meals
to serve at the café on Tuesdays — and are now a
stronger team than ever. A big thank you to all of
them! And welcome back Ann... we missed you!
All Deaf BSL users are welcome to join our outings
and talks and we've enjoyed lots of excellent trips
to interesting places that would otherwise be
inaccessible to Deaf people.
Dcafe was packed with Deaf people socialising
regularly with friends and enjoying lunch together.
And Brinthan’s afternoon activities were full of
lively discussion and fascinating Deaf speakers.
We arranged talks to keep everyone informed
about what’s going on in the Deaf community,
broadened our knowledge about world news,
health and wellbeing, shared stories, played
games and, as always, laughed a lot together!
Martin Bogard continued to run his popular
Computer Club and our Happy Mondays
group created magni昀椀cent works of art with our
volunteer art director, Caroline Janner!

JDATogether — Issue 50 — April 2025
Inspired by Rebecca Clements, we held a summer
event for Deaf families, enabling them to enjoy
spending time with other Deaf parents and their
young Deaf and hearing children.
As always, we enjoyed celebrating Jewish festivals
and festivals from various di昀昀erent cultures and
faiths. And we are very excited that Vicki Ashmore
has started DeafShul — a new Jewish learning and
cultural programme for BSL users, which JDA is
supporting.
